Signals and Copy Trading: What You Are Actually Buying

Signals and copy trading sell you someone else's trading decisions, and the risk stays entirely yours.

Signals and Copy Trading Are Two Different Products

A trading signal is a message telling you what to trade: a pair, a direction, and usually an entry and exit level. It might arrive by Telegram, WhatsApp, email or a paid group, and you decide whether to place the trade yourself. Copy trading removes that decision: you link your account to another trader's account, and their positions are mirrored on yours automatically, in proportion to what you have funded.

The pair names you see most often, GBP/USD, EUR/USD and BTC/USD, are simply the instruments being traded, not evidence of skill. A signal on GBP/USD is a view about the British pound against the US dollar, and it can be wrong. Nothing about the format makes it more reliable than your own reading of the chart.

Both products are sold as shortcuts. One sells you the idea, the other sells you the execution. Neither transfers the risk away from your account.

Before you send money

A fixed monthly return, promised in advance
Ask which licence permits it, then look the firm up on the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators.
A deposit asked for in gift cards or vouchers
Check the broker's own funding page: firms list bank, card and wallet rails, not vouchers.
Someone offering to trade the account for you
Managing money for a client is a separate permission. The register says whether a firm holds it.
A withdrawal released only after a new payment
Read the withdrawal terms you agreed to. A fee invented at payout time is not in them.

None of this is a judgement about any firm. Each line is a check you can run yourself, starting at sec.gov.ng.

The Person Selling Signals Has No Stake in Your Loss

This is the part that matters most. A signal provider is usually paid a subscription or a one-off fee whether or not the trade works. A copy trading strategy provider may earn a performance fee on gains, but your losses are yours alone, and you carry them in full.

Screenshots of winners are cheap to produce and impossible for you to audit. You cannot see the trades that were closed at a loss, the account that was quietly reset, or the size that was used to make one good month look impressive. Ask for a verifiable track record over a long period, including drawdowns, and treat a refusal as an answer in itself.

There is also a plain conflict of interest when a signal group is run by, or paid by, a broker or an affiliate. The incentive is to keep you trading, because trading generates revenue for the intermediary regardless of your result.

Check Who You Are Dealing With Before You Send Money

Before funding anything, look up the firm on the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators at sec.gov.ng. That register is the public record, and it is the only answer that counts. Do not accept a screenshot of a certificate, a logo on a website, or a claim in a Telegram bio as a substitute for checking the register yourself.

Payment is where caution is cheapest. Bank transfer is the main rail in Nigeria, with OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint, card and USSD transfer also in use. If you are asked to send money to a personal account rather than a named business account, that is a reason to stop and verify, not to hurry.

For copy trading, read the platform's own funding page for the amounts, fees and conditions that apply to your account. Those figures change and they are specific to the platform, so they belong on the platform's page, not in a guide.

Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Fees are stated in two places - your provider's app and the broker's funding page - and the payout belongs on the account that paid in.

Timing and Access Do Not Fix a Bad Decision

Nigerian traders work on WAT, UTC+1, and the sessions fall at convenient hours: Sydney runs 22:00 to 07:00, Tokyo 01:00 to 10:00, London 09:00 to 18:00, and New York 13:00 to 22:00. The London and New York overlap, 13:00 to 18:00 WAT, is the busiest stretch and the one most signals are timed around.

Liquidity at that hour does not make a signal correct. It means fills are usually cleaner and spreads are usually tighter, which helps your execution but says nothing about direction. A copied position still moves against you at 3am while you are asleep, and you cannot intervene.

That loss of control is the real cost of copy trading. You have outsourced the decision and kept the consequences.

The clocks in force today are shown as follows: GMT applies in London until 28 March, while EDT applies in New York until 1 November. Nigeria does not change clocks, so each move shifts these local times by an hour and the page is rebuilt on the day it happens.

A Signal Is an Opinion, a Copy Trade Is an Instruction

When you pay for a signal, you receive a view and then decide whether to act. Nothing leaves your account until you place the trade yourself. That gap between the message and the order is where your judgement lives, and it is the only real protection you have.

Copy trading removes that gap. You authorise a platform or broker to place trades on your account automatically, matching someone else's positions. The decision is made once, at setup, and then repeated without you. That is a different kind of risk, not a bigger signal.

Many Nigerian readers treat copy trading as a paid signal with extra convenience. It is closer to handing over a standing instruction to your bank. Read the authorisation the way you would read a debit mandate, because that is effectively what it is.

Your Bank Transfer App Is the Last Place You Can Still Stop

Signals and copy trading subscriptions in Nigeria are usually paid by bank transfer, and often by OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint, card or USSD transfer. Once the money leaves, recovery depends entirely on the recipient choosing to refund you. There is no chargeback on a completed transfer.

This makes the payment step the real decision point, not the signup page. Before confirming, check the account name against the name on the provider's own website or registration documents. A mismatch is a fact you can act on. A convincing sales page is not.

Keep the transfer receipt and the exact account details you paid. If a dispute arises later, those records are what you have. The SEC Nigeria register at sec.gov.ng tells you whether an operator is registered, but it will not reverse a transfer you already made.

Brokers usually also ask for BVN, proof of address; requirements differ per firm. Look at the opening page of the broker you chose: that is the list that applies to you.

Copy Trading Can Keep Trading After You Stop Watching

A signal provider who goes quiet simply stops sending messages. A copy trading arrangement can continue opening and closing positions on your account while you are asleep, at work, or dealing with a network outage. WAT is UTC+1, and major market sessions run through the Nigerian night.

If your phone is off, your data is exhausted, or you are travelling, the copying does not pause. Losses can accumulate before you see a single notification. The platform's own documentation should state how to stop copying and how quickly that takes effect.

Check that stop mechanism before you fund anything, and test that you can reach it. An arrangement you cannot switch off from your own device is not a product you control.

A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. An app store listing says nothing about a licence; the register does.

Past Results Are Not Evidence About the Next Trade

Copy trading platforms often display a track record beside each trader. That record shows what happened under past market conditions, with past position sizes, on someone else's account. It says nothing about what the same strategy does next month, or with your money.

A common failure mode is joining a trader after a strong run and then experiencing the drawdown that follows it. The displayed figures also rarely show the full picture of how a trader behaves when positions move against them.

Treat any performance display as marketing until you have read the platform's own risk disclosure. Where a figure matters, such as a minimum, a fee or a leverage limit, look it up on the broker's funding page rather than in an advert or a chat group.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Search the legal entity from the broker's own footer, not the brand.

What is copy trading in simple terms?

Copy trading links your account to another trader's account so their positions are opened and closed on yours automatically. You keep the profit and the loss, and you can usually stop the link, but you cannot choose individual trades while it runs.

Are forex signals worth paying for?

Sometimes, but the fee structure usually means the provider is paid whether you win or lose. Judge a provider on a long, verifiable record that includes losing periods, and never on screenshots. If you cannot audit the record, you are paying for a story.

How do I check a signal provider or copy trading platform in Nigeria?

Search the firm on the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators at sec.gov.ng and read what the register actually says. Check the platform's own funding page for fees and conditions, and be wary of requests to send money to a personal account rather than a named business account.

Margin trading in forex and CFDs can cost you more than you put in. Most retail accounts end up losing. Nothing here is advice.
