Demo accounts: what they teach, and where they mislead

A demo account shows you how a platform behaves, not how you behave when real money is at stake.

A demo teaches the platform. The two factors that decide results are beyond what it can teach.

A demo account teaches the mechanics of a platform, nothing more

A demo account is a practice login funded with simulated money. It exists so you can learn where the buy and sell buttons sit, how to set a stop, how to read an order ticket, and what happens to your screen when London opens at 09:00 WAT and New York at 13:00 WAT.

That is a real skill and it is worth the time. Clumsy clicking costs money in live trading, and the demo is the cheapest place to make those early mistakes. Treat it as a driving simulator: useful for the controls, silent about the traffic.

The limit is stated plainly. Simulated money does not produce fear, and fear is the variable that changes how most people trade. You can hold a losing position for days on a demo without a flutter in your chest. On a funded account, that same position will keep you awake.

MetaTrader 5The newer build; more order types and timeframesMetaQuotes

A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. An app store listing says nothing about a licence; the register does.

The demo hides the costs that decide whether you last

A practice account usually fills your orders at clean prices with no spread widening, no slippage and no rejection. Live conditions are messier, particularly around news releases and at the rollover hour. The gap between the two is the part of trading that quietly drains accounts.

Funding and withdrawal are absent too. In Nigeria the main rail is bank transfer, with OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint, card and USSD transfer also in use. Each has its own timing and confirmation steps, and none of that appears in a demo. Before you send anything, read the broker's funding page and check the transfer in your bank app.

So use the demo for order mechanics, then test the money path separately with a small amount you are willing to lose. If a firm's withdrawal process is slow or vague, no amount of screen time will fix that.

Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Fees are stated in two places - your provider's app and the broker's funding page - and the payout belongs on the account that paid in.

Practice accounts flatter a strategy that real money will punish

On a demo you can take every signal, size up after a loss, and never close a bad trade. The equity curve looks fine because nothing is at stake. That curve is a record of your clicking, not of your judgement.

A more honest drill is to trade the demo exactly as you would with your own money, including a written rule for when you stop for the day. If you cannot follow your own rules with fake money, you will not follow them with real money.

Keep a simple log: the session you traded, why you entered, and what you did when it went against you. Sydney runs 22:00 to 07:00 WAT and Tokyo 01:00 to 10:00 WAT, so late-night sessions are easy to overtrade. The log will show you that faster than any indicator.

Check the firm, not just the platform

A polished demo app tells you nothing about who is behind it. Before you deposit, open the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators at sec.gov.ng and search the name you are dealing with. The register is the source, not a blog post or a sponsored video.

Do not take anyone's word about a firm's status, this guide's included. The register answers the question directly, and if a name is not there, that is information you now have before any money moves.

Be equally sceptical of anyone promising steady income from forex. Trading is a risk activity, not a salary, and a demo account that makes it feel easy is doing you a disservice.

We would rather show a gap than a number we cannot stand behind, so untraceable figures are simply not printed.

A demo account cannot rehearse a naira bank transfer, so the first live deposit is the real test

Funding a live account in Nigeria runs through a bank transfer, and often through OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint, card or USSD. None of that exists inside a demo. The demo wallet fills itself, so the friction of moving actual money never appears until it matters most.

That friction is not cosmetic. A transfer can be delayed, sent from a name that does not match the trading account, or routed through an app with its own daily limits. Each of those turns into a support ticket while a position sits open.

Before trading live, complete one small transfer and confirm it lands, then withdraw part of it back to the same bank account. The broker's funding page lists the accepted rails and any cut-off times. Treat that round trip as part of demo practice, not an afterthought.

Demo servers and live servers are different machines, and the difference shows up when it is expensive

A demo runs on a practice server with simulated fills. A live account runs on the broker's production server, where your order meets other people's orders. The two can behave differently during busy periods, which is exactly when a Nigerian trader is most likely to be at the screen.

Because Nigeria sits at UTC+1, the London session overlaps the local working day and the New York session runs into the evening. Those are the hours when spreads widen and requotes or slippage become more common. A demo taken during quiet hours teaches a smoothness that does not hold.

Log demo sessions at the times you would actually trade, including the minutes around major scheduled releases. If the practice platform fills you instantly at 9pm WAT but the live platform would not, the demo has taught you the wrong lesson about timing.

Brokers usually also ask for BVN, proof of address; requirements differ per firm. Look at the opening page of the broker you chose: that is the list that applies to you.

Your broker's registration status is a separate question from whether the platform feels trustworthy

A polished demo says nothing about who holds your money. In Nigeria, firms offering investment and capital market services are expected to appear on the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators, published at sec.gov.ng. That register is the place to check, not a review site or an app store rating.

The distinction readers get wrong is between the platform and the firm. The platform is software you can trial for free. The firm is the legal entity that would hold your deposit, and it may be a different name from the brand on the login screen.

Search the exact legal name from the broker's terms and conditions on sec.gov.ng before funding. If the entity you are contracting with is not listed, or the terms are vague about which entity holds client money, the demo's quality is irrelevant to the decision.

Before you send money

A fixed monthly return, promised in advance
Ask which licence permits it, then look the firm up on the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators.
A deposit asked for in gift cards or vouchers
Check the broker's own funding page: firms list bank, card and wallet rails, not vouchers.
Someone offering to trade the account for you
Managing money for a client is a separate permission. The register says whether a firm holds it.
A withdrawal released only after a new payment
Read the withdrawal terms you agreed to. A fee invented at payout time is not in them.

None of this is a judgement about any firm. Each line is a check you can run yourself, starting at sec.gov.ng.

Demo discipline breaks down fastest for traders who skip a written plan and a trade log

The usual failure is not technical. It is that a demo account has no consequence, so position sizes creep, stop losses get moved and losing trades get held. Nothing in the software prevents this, and the habit travels to the live account intact.

The order of operations that works is dull: write the entry, exit and stop rules before opening the demo, then log every trade with the reason it was taken. Review the log weekly. A demo used without a log produces confidence, not evidence.

Set a fixed practice size and never change it mid-session, even when a trade is going badly. If the rules cannot be followed on a demo where nothing is at stake, they will not survive a live account funded by a bank transfer.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Search the legal entity from the broker's own footer, not the brand.

Is a forex demo account free?

Practice accounts are normally offered at no cost, but the terms sit with the broker, not with this guide. Read the broker's own pages for what the demo includes and how long it stays open, and check the firm on the SEC Nigeria register at sec.gov.ng before you go further.

How long should I use a demo before trading live?

There is no fixed period, and anyone quoting one is guessing. Use it until the mechanics are automatic and you can follow a written plan without breaking it. Then test the funding and withdrawal path with a small amount before committing more.

Can I make money on a demo account?

No. Demo balances are simulated, so gains there are not withdrawable and prove nothing about live results. Treat the demo as practice for platform skills and record-keeping, and judge any live decision on your own risk limits, not on a practice equity curve.

Margin trading in forex and CFDs can cost you more than you put in. Most retail accounts end up losing. Nothing here is advice.
